Almaz - York

The owner is welcoming and offers a generous portion of meat for the price. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, particularly in the back room. 5 stars.

Cons: The Moussaka starter did not come with bread as expected, the Kunafe dessert was pre-made and not very tasty, and there wasn't enough salad served with the main dish. However, I would still recommend giving this restaurant a try as it's not a bad spot!

We randomly discovered Almaz, a small restaurant, and Saahil served us. The service was excellent and the food was amazing. The flavors were incredible. We ordered a variety of dishes and each one was delicious. Despite reading some negative reviews, we were glad we decided to try it out. We highly recommend this place. We tried a tapas restaurant with good reviews last night, but we were disappointed with the lack of flavor and average service. My wife loved the cocktails. The men's restroom was very clean and had a pleasant smell.

Service is nice and efficient but the food is OK at best. We had lamb kofta and Lamb Mandi. The kofta was over cooked. The chips was industrial. Vine leaves were OK at best. The Bread for the hummus was an extra which is strange. Drinks (j2o, coke) were not chilled. Neither was the Pinot Grigio. Not inedible, but won't be back again.

I'm a York local. I like to think I've tried a fair few spots so when I say this was one of the best dining experiences I've had in the city, please understand that isn't hyperbole. Our chairs were pulled out for us to sit down, and the server came and took our orders quickly he made sure to come and check on us often and offered to refill our sauces, and was just generally charming. I can honestly say I've never received nicer service at a restaurant. The food was incredible, and I really recommend the meats so you can experience the wonderful flavours. (And if you can't eat it all, they'll wrap it up for you, too! A few reviews on Google complain about either the takeaway, or the price, but for a sit in meal within the York walls you'll soon find these prices were normal for York, and fine. The portions were big, and we felt full when we'd finished. The atmosphere is also incredible. Authentic music is playing so you never felt awkward and the seating was very comfortable. I very much enjoyed myself and I can't recommend it enough. It truly is a hidden gem in York.
