The Golden Lion in York is in the city centre, near the Shambles, but it is absolutely not a touristy pub. It is a large pub with a simple, large square bar. The decor is old-style with all flooring, walls and furniture in dark wood, with a few decorative glass panels to break it up. Style-wise it is a sports bar with multiple televisions, which is why I came in. Although clearly in need of a refurb, it was clean and tidy and the service from the young lady behind the bar was friendly and efficient. I was particularly impressed that, although she seemed to be on her own, she kept all tables clear and spotlessly clean. I’d be more than happy to come in again.
We have eaten in this Pub on many occasions, normally for Lunch, but chose to go for an evening meal. We were pleased with the choice of food on the menu, the staff were very accommodating as we required a high chair, and they were very helpful throughout. Food came out hot and even though it was the busiest month of the year, the staff remained pleasant throughout. Would really recommend this Pub
Went to York for the Christmas markets and stumbled upon this little gem. It was very busy when we went but with great beer and excellent service, I’m not surprised! Well worth a visit
There was a group of five of us in our 60s looking for something to eat and a drink. Staff were not friendly or helpful. When we ordered a roast dinner, several items which were on the menu were missing from the plates. We didn't complain, just asked the staff if they could provide the missing items of food. There was no apology. When the food was brought to our table, the best I can describe it was it was slid across the table, it wasn't placed on the table as you would expect. The food wasn't up to standard, just edible. One of us ordered steak pie but the pastry was so hard it could not be eaten. None of us were happy with this visit
