Eugene's Sausage Fries At Eavesdrop Brewery

There aren 't many better sausage-themed restaurants in the DMV, at least none I 've found. Eugene 's provides high-quality meats, toppings, rolls, and even fries. They are also conveniently adjacent to my favorite brewery and if there 's one thing that pairs well with craft beer, it 's craft sausages, fries, and pretzels. So let 's get to the food. I 've tried a number of items and I 'll try to hit some highlights: The brats have a great texture and spice, not too heavy on the nutmeg and whatnot but it 's there and practically perfect. The half-smokes are as good as you find in the DMV, with a bit of spice and smoke. The hot dogs have great snap and the texture is perfectly dense and the flavor is beefy and unprocessed. The pretzel buns are great, but do tend to fall apart at the seam. The El Diablo is alarmingly spicy. I like hot food. Love it. Maybe I 'm getting old, but this sausage is humblingly spicy. It was humbling the next day too, if you know what I mean. Danger Dog and LA dog are my go-tos. Always solid. We usually get the elote fries with corn, tajin, and cilantro aioli. Anything Reuben has too little corned beef for my taste. Bacon cheddar anything is so-so. It 's hard to screw up bacon and cheddar, but for me, it 's always been pretty boring. Now for the pretzel. O.M.G. Crisp brown, salty crust around a fluffy interior. It 's like a cloud inside. Can 't recommend enough. I am a soft pretzel junkie, and have never had better. They are served with spicy mustard and beer cheese sauce. The service is great, and while the interior is tiny, it doesn 't matter as they give you a beeper to let you know when your order is ready, so you don 't have to wait inside. Wait time is very reasonable. Here 's where they drive me nuts and why they don 't get more stars: they run out of stuff all the time, and you might not know until you pick up your order. On our most recent order, they were out of grilled onions, spicy mustard, and pretzel rolls. Those are huge. Look, I need good mustard with my pretzel, and getting three packets of French 's yellow does not cut the...well...mustard. If I knew ahead of time I wouldn 't have ordered it. On other visits they 've been out of other things, enough so that after this last disaster we started questioning if we 'd order again. I also want to note that while I FULLY support shopping small and shopping local, we just recently realized that we could get eight plain dogs at Sheetz next door for the price of one at Eugene 's. Would I eat them? Hell no. But my kids dgaf, so the countless $8 dogs we 've gotten them here have officially been replaced by Sheetz dogz when we 're at Eavesdrop. It 's been a great relationship except for when it hasn 't. Will we order again? Probably. But I 'd suggest they keep more in stock and if they 're out of items, let their customers know upon ordering (which they do sometimes! all the time. And Eugene 's, if you 're reading; spicy mustard needs to be as ubiquitous as your quality meats and glorious pretzels.
