Don't know why this has the rating it does. Only people in the restaurant and our seafood platter and oysters (hardly any preparation time) took 40minutes to arrive. On getting our meal we were told that cutlery was over by the window...busy were you? With the other 2 customers and 5 staff? Now to the food...hands down worst oysters we've had in Tassie! Shrivelled and tiny. Bacon used for the Kilpatrick was horrible quality and they had the gall to charge us $3.50 each. No courtesy check or offer to refill drinks. Safe to say we won't be coming back; such a shame as they have an amazing location. Complacency at its finest and it's only lack of competition bringing people in the door.
[The Bay Restaurant review] This was the best meal I've had in my trip to Tasmania. In a land of pricey tourist trap restaurants, this was definitely catered to tourists but was not a trap. Here's what you get: amazing waterfront sunset views great waiting staff, better than I've experienced in some Michelin restaurants white table cloth dining amazing food, with an Asian fusion successfully executed mains at only $30 $40 for large portions Given that you're going to be paying $30 40 prices for mains at other touristy restaurants, especially the ones at Bicheno, this is a no brainer for lunch or dinner when visiting the Freycinet area. Oysters were fresh and large. The best were the Japanese inspired ones with wakame and ginger the flavours just go so well together! At $4 each, not the cheapest, but well worth it. Wallaby entree was interesting and unusual. The wallaby was cooked perfectly, still a little pink in the center. Seafood sambal stew for main course was generous and a little spicy, with authentic Malaysian sambal taste coming through. Lots of seafood in the bowl! The best value dish were the sides at $10 for a side dish, it sounded expensive, but my side of beans asian style was almost as big as my main course. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone visiting the Freycinet area it is a no brainer for me to get a really good meal here at a very reasonable price for this area.
Review for The Bay Restaurant at Freycinet Lodge: The entres started off good, with the broadbean falafels on pistachio crumble. Then it was downhill from there. Pork belly main dish was chewy and disappointing. Seafood bouillabaisse was absolutely inedible due to the amount of cracked clam shells and in the soup base. It also tasted like it was leftover from a bottom of a gumbo pot due to the burnt after taste in the soup. Sides of spiced roasted cauliflower was oily and tasteless. Potatos with truffle oil did not taste like there were any truffle oil on it. It was a very disappointing experience overall, especially for a supposedly highly recommended restaurant in the Freycinet area.
Didn't have availability in their restaurant side and ended up eating at their bistro next door. Foods were surprisingly good for a bistro! The mussels were not much of a surprising taste, bit salty too, the slow cooked beef cheek was what is needed after 2 hrs of kayaking... The fish was under cooked in the center, but they replaced it again with a second serve. Recommended if you are around the area.
