Monsal head is usually busy because of the excellent eating, cozy atmosphere and amazing intentionally comfortable by wanderers due to the beautiful derby landscape. I had a vegetarian wellington with halloumi smoked aubergine and carburized red paprika. imaginatiw and really well cooked. we had both a cure and a glass of wine and it came to £30.
A very nice Sunday dinner. good value and a pleasant environment.
Monsal Head is a hotel and restaurant in the Derbyshire Peaks, and a favourite with us. Its a great drive out of Sheffield, and this spot is understandably popular with walkers. It is perched on top of a steep drop into Monsal Vale, and the open countryside of the Derbyshire Peaks is a wonderful day out for active walkers. As a result, it is quite crowded at lunchtime. I drive my 88 year old mother out, whenever I visit her, just for the views. The menu is amazingly varied, and the food is good quality. The Stables has very few tables, very cosy and intimate with a stove fire, and there is a separate restaurant, but you need to book, as it is not always open.
The Open Table reservation just mentioned the restaurant which was deserted when we arrived. A kitchen staff told us to try the stables bar which was in a separate building and that was a cosy bar with large wood burner and stone flagged floors. The food was nicely done but we were the only guests apart from the bar staff and a couple of their friends who were just chatting amongst themselves. Ambience would have been better with more guests
