Found this beautiful little pub while enjoying a weekend in Hayling Island. Absolutely gorgeous, people very welcoming and the Sunday roast was lovely!!!! Thank you
Very average food, disappointing and when enquiring as to the £2.00 additional charge to be informed 'that 's for the additional gravy you ordered ' !! to accompany the pie and mash dinners. Very little atmosphere, not many diners, tables covered by plastic tablecloths and grubby menus.
We were drawn into the Maypole by the sign out front advertising Sophies Pie Mash and Liquor. We were a party of 4 and we all had a different main. Three had pie and one the mussels. There were about 20 mussels on the plate hardly more than a starter portion anywhere else. The pies were OK. The deep filled pie was filled with good quality steak and kidney The traditional London mince pies were mostly mushy beef mince. The pastry was hard on the top. The mash was unseasoned and just that. Mashed potato. It was bitty and not creamy at all. The worst bit was to follow. We asked for liquor and 3 jugs of gravy. The liquor was gloopy and not appetising at all and were served up in small gravy boats. I asked for another as the two pies needed more. When the bill arrived we had been charged 2x £2 for the egg cup sized amounts of 'extra ' gravy. Outrageous! Needless to say we will not be returning.
We tried several places on Hayling Island in search of a Sunday roast, but everywhere was fully booked. As we were leaving the island, we stumbled upon the Maypole. Thankfully, they had availability and we were seated in the quiet establishment. However, our first impression was damp tablecloths, which made the menu and napkins wet. Despite wanting to move, all the cloths were damp. Our food arrived quickly, which was a bit concerning. The roast itself had decent potatoes, but only two small slices of meat. The vegetables seemed either frozen or overcooked and mushy. We opted for pigs in blankets, which had nice bacon but the sausage lacked substance. At £16 plus extras, the price was on par with some great roasts, but unfortunately, we will not be returning. Additionally, having a radio playing with adverts during our meal was annoying.
