One must try to treat: Portuguese Malasadas Hawaii style! The traditional Malasadas are the simple sugar doped donuts type fry dough, but I prefer the cream-filled Malasadas. We tried one of each with a cup of freshly brewed Kauai coffee. My favorite was the coconut cream Malasada, but also enjoyed the purple taro flavored Malasada. The quality and softness of the dough rivals everything I found at home on the Azores! It is amazing how, after all these years, the Portuguese influence over the entire Hawaiian archipelago as a result of the first great wave of immigrants who are in 1878, especially from the Azores and Madeira, where the Malasadas are a popular pleasure. These were whole families who came with the intention to stay and when their contracts ended as plantation luna (supervisors), most opened companies such as bakeries and restaurants. Today there are many places where we can still enjoy the famous Portuguese sweet bread (known in the mainland as Hawaiian sweet bread), Portuguese bean soup, Portuguese sausage, the love of pork (especially the roasted piglets), and my favorite “Malasadas”. Even katsu chicken is a Portuguese import by the Japanese influence. In addition to their influence on food, the Portuguese introduced the “Kulle”, a gift that is still heard today and will forever be connected to Hawaiian music.
This place was amazing! I absolutely loved the ube rolls; I devoured them so quickly that I didn't even get a chance to take a picture. They were buttery, flaky, and incredibly fresh! The malasadas were also delightful—soft and fluffy. Everything was so delicious!
We had a couple of malasadas and a coconut turnover on our way to Princeville, and wow, they were amazing! The malasadas were delicious, especially with the pumpkin filling. But the real standout was the coconut turnover—it was truly one of the best baked goods I've ever tasted, and I know I'll be thinking about it for weeks to come!
This charming spot is located in an open-air shopping center. They offer a great selection of pastries, cakes, pies, as well as malasadas and coffee drinks. The place is very clean and has ample outdoor seating.
