Doc's Diner; a true, undefiled taste of Liberty University. I can't tell you how many late nights, after many hours of studying, I’ve wandered into the familiar halls of this diner, just to sit down and feel the cool, sticky, comforting embrace of the booth seats beneath me. I'd typically order the same meal, a plate of pancakes with bacon and a sundae for desert. Didn't matter what time of the day it was, those portion sizes were plentiful and exactly what I needed. Sure, there was typically a wait. Sometimes you'd put your order in and wait for 30-45 minutes for 3 pancakes to get thrown onto the griddle, but you never complained. The soothing tones of Christian radio kept your rage down. Sure, the restaurant could be cleaner. I once almost lost one of my shoes because it got stuck to the floor, but they have an unlimited garden bar...so are you really going to complain? Many students at Liberty just don't understand the charm of this place unless you live on East Campus, especially the Square. Sure, you can come to visit anytime you want, but for us it was always more than just a fake diner. For us, it was a place of fellowship and community. A place where we could break bread, catch the big game and awkwardly see people you recognized from class. For us, the smell coming from the bathrooms was like a sweet perfume that we grew to love. Yes, Doc's Diner was more than just a restaurant to me. I dare say, it felt a little more like home.
Doc's has really improved over the last couple years. The service is better and faster, the food is better, and it's just a better experience (I will say that I haven't been there during their busy hours, though). I'd say they are usually a four or five star (for a campus dining facility) dependent on the food. Usually there's not much issue, but occasionally I'll notice that the food isn't exactly what I ordered or it's not fresh (eg. Chicken strips/mozzarella sticks should not be stale). Other than those times, though, definitely a good place to eat.
