I grew up in Monroe and always relied on the Smithy for a great meal. However, when I returned for the first time in 15-20 years last Friday with my wife, we had the worst experience at a restaurant. We arrived at 6:30 and were greeted by a friendly young lady who took our order at 6:40. Despite enjoying a salad, our meal was delayed. The waitress assured us it would be ready in a few minutes at 7:15, but it kept getting pushed back. We finally decided to cancel our order at 7:40 after waiting for a long time. The manager apologized and gave us a bill of $48 for 3 drinks. Unfortunately, I would recommend looking for other dining options in the Monroe/Trumbull/Newtown area as this is not the Smithy we remember.

Our first visit to The Smithy was a success! We celebrated Ron's birthday there, and he, being a trained chef with a discerning palate, absolutely loved it. He declared the porterhouse to be the best he's ever had and already wants to go back next week. We will be returning for my birthday as well! The half-hour drive was well worth it, as everything was incredibly fresh. The salad bar was excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the cod and other fish options. I highly recommend the baked potato with butter and sour cream, served just like grandma used to make it in tin foil. The ambiance was beautiful with interesting decor, antiques, and a cozy fireplace, making it perfect for this time of year. RJ effortlessly listed off all of the specials, and the service was top-notch and very attentive.
