From the moment we set down it just felt like home. the staff were kind ,friendly, and attentive. it was like being waited on by your favorite Sister, cooked for by your favorite Aunt. and helped by the loving mother we all had as children. The food was like I had stepped back in time to an old English pub and restaurant. so yummy I took some home for the next day. if I could give this place 6 stars I would. Thank You Vince P.S. I would like to order 2 Christmas cakes
This place is hidden along Watt Avenue in a little strip mall in a run down area of North Highlands, typically the neighborhood has diminished since the days of closing the military base nearby at McClellan Air Force Base. It's mostly designed as a little British store with food and candy from there, but there's a little cafe that serves fish chips, scones, standard black tea, and some other items on a limited menu. The decor is a step back in time, simple and well worn, and the folks that run it are proper Brits. We went there just to see what it was like, and ordered a two piece Fish Chips, and an Egg Chips, with a medium size pot of what appeared to be standard black tea. There were no other teas offered, so it doesn't claim to be a tea room for high tea or anything like that. The tea came out promptly, nice in its porcelain pot with flowers on it, and some creme in a little pouring pitcher. In a reasonable amount of time, out came the food dishes, piping hot. There were two large pieces of breaded and deep fried fish that appeared to be cod, along with some steak fries, tarter sauce, and ketchup. The single fried egg came over medium (they didn't ask how we wanted it) with some fries on the plate. Sort of an odd meal, we thought. The fish was typical of these types of places, due to deep frying it's filled with cooking oil and it's not particularly flavorful either, although the batter had a nice crunchy texture and tasted good. We thought the prices were high for the food offered, we had a scone and hot cross bun that were $6 and $5 each, which were definitely expensive. Altogether it ran about $40, which after eating everything there seemed pretty steep for the meal. We probably will not return in the future, although plenty of other people do because it's been around for a long time. We agreed that if we did, we wouldn't order either of those food items again.
Sine the air base has closed this has become one of those hidden gems. If you are British or like anything British this is the place to come. It is out of the way for the normal tourist but well worth it. They have hard to find items such as Oxo bullion. We also had lunch there which was crumpets and tea. Crumpets are hard to toast and they did a wonderful job. The hours are restrictive but for a tourist workable. They open at 11 except for Sunday but only stay open the latest 5. Closed Tues and Wednesday. They do have beans on toast as well as steak and kidney pie.
The Fish and chips could have been better. But worth a try.Decor was definitely Brit. They have a British store right there on the premises. Service was not bad. They were definetly friendly
Never had a bad meal here in 12 years, the service is good the food is always cooked just right. Try the bangers chips with baked beans, it's a can't miss dish
