On our last afternoon we wandered the downtown and stopped for lunch. Food was delicious and the owner is amazing. Greeting her regulars by name and making us summer tourists very welcome. We will definitely stop there next summer!
I have been visiting Southampton since I was a kid and had never been to The Lighthouse before. I finally decided to try it one Monday morning for breakfast. The food was delicious, especially the pancakes. The service was decent and the prices were fair. The owner, a woman, was also very nice.
Big portions. Yummy roast turkey dinner. Quick service. Almost always open. Kids love their fries and chicken fingers. I prefer the chicken pocket sandwich (called the Dewy sandwich I believe) with a side salad.
Travelling the area, on my way to Owen Sound, decided to eat where the locals eat, for breakfast, I asked the guy at the Mac's store where you can get breakfast besides Timmy's, and he said "I dunno, try Walker House" which was closed for breakfast so I saw this joint on the corner. Very Retro. Old Counter, booths and tables, I saw a copy of a local paper, sat down, and waited a few minutes. Got a menu, and a coffee. Asked if they had a local paper I could read. The server was new, and asked what sounded like a grumpy old manager in the back, who said, "tell him no paper today". Sipped on my cup o joe, and saw eggs Benny, my old standby, and noticed it was with peameal bacon. "When in Rome" I thought, ordered it, got a diner classic, on dishes, older than me. the fake wood veneer, the cutlery you can bend with your mind, it was great. The eggs were a bit overdone, but had enough hollandaise to make up for it, and the pea meal bacon was a tasty bacon option I don't get to enjoy very often, gave it a real local appeal. Got my standard three minute, "hows your breakfast"-server-gone-before-I-could-answer schtick. I love this joint. The locals know you are a tourist, and go out of their way to ignore you, and don't share their paper either, lol. Not fancy, but you get fed home cooked food, filling you up and not killing your wallet. I will try the other joints next trip, when and if they are open so I don't miss out on all the options Southampton has to offer, but this place is an ok corner diner.
