The food (by contrast) was expensive, being more the sort of price you would expect to pay in Paris. We...took the menu gourmet at and with water and wine the bill came to In general the food was well prepared, but lacked focus, with the chef clearly thinking that more is more. Our salad starter had lettuce with iberico ham, melon, scampi and scallops. The next course of foie gras was served with a creamy sauce and fig, pear and another fruit that might have been apple (this was one of the more successful dishes). We had a palate-cleanser of cherry granita, followed by filet of beef, served with foie gras sauce, hot chips, some kind of seasoned breadcrumb lump, brussel sprouts, tomato, sun-dried tomato, mushrooms and a jar of vegetables. All of this was good, but some editing may have been in order. Before dessert we were served some petits fours choux puffs, brownies and a sort of vanilla cake with fruit on top, of which only the brownie had any real flavour. Dessert was a tasting plate of different things. They were not described to us but I think were tiramisu, isle flottante, vanilla icecream in a chocolate cup, white chocolate mousse, coffee mousse, a piece of passionfruit and a fruit. The white chocolate mousse went quite nicely with the passionfruit, but otherwise none were memorable. The icecream wasn't made with vanilla bean (as far as I could see) which seemed a bit weak to me. We had a nice local pinot noir from Bergheim, reasonably priced at The maître'd was very friendly and welcoming.
LdF varies a lot in quality with regard to its hotel restaurants. Hostellerie d'Alsace offers a spacious dining space with discreet colours, and gentle spacing between the tables. The service is attentive, and you are given the impression that there is sufficient waiter capacity to...cope with a full restaurant. Just what a guest wants, when you are eagerly waiting for your meal. I had a package deal whith all meals included, sometimes a gamble in a shady hotel. This hotel excels in the quality/price they offer. Fantastic ingredients, well made by a skilled chef, and a very sensible pricing of their wines. I can't give full scores, since this is not a star Guide Micheling restaurant, but it is the best LdF restuarant I have ever been to. Run and enjoy!
